We’ve connected a new 35MW battery storage site in Stockport, adopting and operating the electricity infrastructure powering the new site. The facility in Greater Manchester is helping to balance local electricity network demand and increase energy security.
Powering battery storage in Stockport
As an independent distribution network operator, we operate electricity infrastructure powering battery energy storage systems (BESS) and connect battery storage sites to the distribution network.
We’ve partnered with battery storage system developer Noriker Power to adopt, operate and maintain the electricity network that connects its Welkin Mill battery storage site to the regional network.
There are five 33kV transformers which feed 210 batteries at the site in Stockport, with a total capacity of 35MW. Noriker explains that’s enough power to supply 100,000 UK homes for two hours.
Our electricity infrastructure includes a 33kV intake substation, a 33kV circuit breaker and protection unit, and our intelligent and remote telemetry control system.
Flexible electricity infrastructure design
We’re an Ofgem-regulated independent distribution network operator and we work to the same regulatory standards as local distribution networks (DNOs).
However, we’re able to offer battery storage system owners and operators much more flexibility in the design of the electricity infrastructure powering their sites.
We’re able to adopt and operate any electrical infrastructure equipment approved by the Energy Networks Association (ENA). Whereas BESS operators are typically restricted to a small list set by each incumbent DNO, which can impact on project costs and procurement timelines.
By choosing us to adopt and operate the electricity network powering the Welkin Mill BESS site, Noriker Power benefited from flexible infrastructure design and an expedited design approval process.
Supporting BESS projects nationwide
We’re actively investing in electricity connections to battery storage sites up and down the country. We offer asset value contributions to offset the cost of constructing the electricity network on the site.
